Simplicity

Simplicity. Such a meaningful word. We are always looking for simplicity in our lives. We often find ourselves so tangled up with work, school, family that we can sometimes forget the simple things. Like that first sip of hot tea or coffee on a Fall morning. Brushing your child's hair when the house is still. A kitten curled up in your lap. The sweet kisses of a puppy.

Manufacturers know of our need and tout new products that claim to ease our burdens and simplify our lives. I admit that I will fall for a new item every time! We all just want things to be simpler.

Stylish Food

Living on a budget means not only dressing within ones means but also eating within it as well. Now this does not always equate to boring meals of beans and rice or *shudder* boxed mac&cheese. It means buying locally and in season. Using coupons. Making more dishes from scratch and being more thoughtful in your food choices. This may take a bit more time, but will pay off in a lower food bill and more healthy choices for your family. One easy way to do this is to have the whole family pitch in and help. My granddaughters often come over and help me cut and sort coupons. To them, this onerous chore is a game.

Poached Egg over Polenta a recipe that I sort of went by for this dish. I mainly used it to make the polenta, then I used way more cheese and changed it to cheddar. I seasoned with smoked salt and added a goodly pat of butter. Topped it off with an over easy egg, chopped fresh basil from my garden, sliced avocado and sauteed red bell pepper. A very budget friendly meal when made with in season ingredients. Cost per serving was about $1.00.

Growing your own vegetables is a great idea if you have a yard or porch (for container gardening). This can cut down on your produce bill immensely. Fresh from the garden also tastes better and you have control over pesticides, if you wish to use them or not.

Buying in bulk and then canning and/or freezing is another way to get more out of your grocery budget. When seasonal items go on super sale, buy them up! I have been making my own jellies and pickles and it is much more cost effective than buying ready made. Three pounds of cherries at 99 cents a pound made me 4 half pint jars of jam. I bought my sugar in bulk and I already had the jars so I figure it cost me less than $1.50 a jar to make. Cherry jam usually runs around 4 to 5 dollars a jar at the store. Savings like these can really add up!

One thing to remember, food is supposed to be fun. So let it make you happy, even when you need to cut corners :)

Mall Trippin'

Before my ill-fated Costco trip on Sunday (if you haven't heard about it, let's just say I was feeling under the weather) Tom and I stopped off at the Victor Valley Mall for a little walk-a-bout. He was looking for jeans and I was just looking. We didn't really end up staying too long at the mall as I started not feeling so hot but we did pass by Aeropostale and the 50% off signs lured us in. Tom tried on a whole bunch of jeans and only found one pair that fit. I did find a cute pair of shorts on the clearance rack and a nice patterned cami that will transition well into the Fall/Winter when layered. We only spent $37.00! Less than what the jeans were originally priced, yay! I also splurged on a couple bras at Victoria's Secret. I really wish that my size was easy to find, but 32c/d's are not at Target (Darn you Target!)

So once back at home and after I had recovered I had the new shorts to deal with. They were cute BUT they had this stupid raw hem that was folded up on the outside and I hated that.

Tom's jeans, new cami and new shorts.

So the first thing I did was press the hem to the inside and then I looked through my lace stash and there I found some vintage lavender lace. I pinned it in place.

lace on one leg

Since my daughter Tarah still had my sewing machine and serger and the only other machine at the house was not working I was forced to sew it all in by hand. I did a pricked back stitch that JUST caught the last layer of the shorts so it was invisible, sewing through the lace and the hem. Let me tell you, my hands were really tired after I was done. Going through that thickness is hard on those small muscles! But when it was all done the shorts looked so adorable!

finished!

I can't wait to wear my new shorts with the new cami or with my other blouses. I may even try pairing them with my coral blouse for a eclectic look. I will take pictures when I do :)

Giving My Thighs Some Love

Like most of us I have issues. Body issues. I inherited my great grandmother's thighs. They are known on her side of the family as the "Calendar Thighs." I have a great aunt Edna who was rumoured to have used a rolling pin to tame hers. No matter what weight I am at, my thighs still have those pockets of fat that will carry me through a famine. After 35 years of fighting a losing battle of the thigh bulge I have decided to do something radical. I am going to just love my thighs.

I am going to wear shorts without fear. I am going to wear mini skirts. I am not going to worry what people are going to say about me behind my back. Why? Because it is MY body not theirs and I get to love it and show it off as I see fit.

My new short shorts

As one of the blogs I read puts it, we are so judgmental about ourselves and each other. ( Already Pretty ) I do not want to be caught up in that. I want to love ALL of me. Even the jiggly bits :)
